U.S. President-elect Donald Trump called for an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine on Sunday, shortly after meeting with French and Ukrainian leaders in Paris. He claimed that Kyiv “would like to make a deal” to end the more than 1,000-day war. In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump stated that both Moscow and Kyiv have lost hundreds of thousands of soldiers in a conflict that “should never have started.” He emphasised, “There should be an immediate ceasefire, and negotiations should begin. Too many lives are being needlessly wasted, and too many families are being destroyed.” He urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to take action to end the fighting.

Trump’s comments followed a meeting on Saturday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and French President Emmanuel Macron, which Zelenskyy later described as “constructive.” Speaking to reporters that day, Zelenskyy insisted that any peace deal “should be just” for Ukrainians, ensuring that Russia and Putin, or any other aggressors, will not have the opportunity to return.

In a separate social media update on Sunday, Zelenskyy asserted that Kyiv has lost 43,000 soldiers since Moscow’s all-out invasion on February 24, 2022, while an additional 370,000 have been wounded.

According to VOA, both Russia and Ukraine have been reluctant to publish official casualty figures. However, Western officials have reported that the recent months of intense positional warfare in eastern Ukraine have resulted in record losses for both sides, with tens of thousands killed and wounded each month.
