What are the Duties or Roles of a Pastors Wife?
While the Bible doesn’t explicitly mention the pastor’s wife’s role in leading the Church ministry, it does emphasize the importance of women in supporting and being submissive to their husbands. Ephesians 5:22-24 states, “Wives, place yourselves under your husbands’ authority as you have placed yourselves under the Lord’s authority. The husband is the head of his wife, and Christ is the head of the church. It is his body, and he is its Savior. As the church is under Christ’s authority, wives are under their husbands’ authority in everything.” This underscores the significant role of the pastor’s wife in the church ministry.
Suppose the Lord calls a man into the ministry, including his wife and entire family. While this may differ from a specific Church’s denomination and board settings at times, the scriptures shouldn’t be ignored as a measuring rod for any decisions that would be reached regarding this context.
Paul in 1 Timothy 3 gives us the qualifications of a “bishop” or a pastor today, and in verse four, we see one who rules his own house well, having his children in submission with all reverence. Rules well means being a biblical husband with a submissive wife and children who love & give him respect. The pastor, the head of the home, will be more successful as a leader in the church he pastors, and this means that his wife is his helper in the ministry of the house and the church. They partner in the ministry & all areas of life, not just home affairs. Let the woman exercise her duties freely without touching her husband’s God-ordained position of heading the Church and the home.
The wife shouldn’t do the pastor’s work, but the pastor and his wife work together to do God’s service. Many people want to put the pastor’s wife strictly to keep the home fires burning and the husband’s prayer partner. Partly, that is her responsibility, but the pastor’s wife often has gifts that can be used in the ministry. Also, some women whose husbands are pastors see it as his ministry and don’t join him. There should be a good balance between these two ideas to bring glory to God in all things. A pastor’s wife is critical to the church.
A Biblically sound Pastor will oversee the home and the Church while recognizing his wife’s spiritual gifts and other potential and using them both at home and in the Church under him.
